Ghoul, Interrupted

5 Minute Prompt -
monster caught my eye, so this prompt is all about what story this image stirs in you.The monster growled and bellowed as it chased the teenagers. It was closing the gap, almost within arms reach.
Matt knew they shouldn’t have been making out in an empty warehouse. Hadn’t they seen enough horror movies, hadn’t they cracked enough jokes about how stupid THOSE kids were. Commented on the fact THEY would be smarter?
It didn’t matter now, because they were going to die. And they didn’t even get to 2nd base! What a rip off.
As they ran, they had to duck, doge and dive to avoid the clutter that littered the hallways. While attempting to hurdle a plastic chair (unnecessarily) Matt’s legs became tangled and he went flying. He landed with a thud, hitting his chin on the floor. He saw stars. He laid their, prone and helpless, unable to get up.
The monster closed it, it’s slimy hand hooking onto Matts calf. This was it, he was done for.
Sheryl leaped forward yelling “WAIT!”.
The monster stopped, surprised.
“Why are you doing this? We haven’t done anything to you, we didn’t bother you, why are you trying to kill us?”
The monster pulled back, shocked at being addressed. He opened his mouth to release a terrifying growl but stopped. Why was he chasing these children? He had never stopped to think about it before, it was just the way it was. He had never taken the time to think about why he killed, over and over again….
As the monster sat there, mired in his existential crisis, Sheryl helped Matt up and they quietly slipped away.
I’m going to be completely honest….I cheated.
For all of the times where I said these exercises are meant to just get you writing, they aren’t meant to be finished pieces or work, that you put that pencil down at 5 minutes and leave the story where it is, I failed. I took 1 extra minute to complete this story.
Maybe it’s my fault for picking an image that I already saw the story for, but I’m ok with it, because it was fun. And that’s what I want these prompts to be for you, fun. So if the idea of stick to 5 minutes is too overwhelming and you just can’t stand to have an unfinished piece, then do what you need. I still encourage you to try to stick to the 5 minutes as much as possible, as the pressure is part of the exercise, but we are human and sometimes we get invested enough in a story that we just HAVE to finish it.
Thank you again to Dan for allowing me to future your art as a prompt. I hope I didn’t let you and your monster down.
~Ash
The rules:
1. Set a time for 5 minutes.
2. Get writing. Don’t overthink it, let the story take you where it wants to go.
3. When the time stops, you stop (ok, you can cheat a little, finish your current sentence, then stop.)
4. In my game, you are allowed to fix spelling errors - but leave the rest of it alone!
5. Share your creation in the comments below.
